Year Five #19: On the Death of a Friend, part 2 preview, and other Year Five updates

Out this week is issue nineteen(ad) of IDW's TOS comic maxiseries Year Five(ad), which is part two of the Doctor McCoy focused medical mystery story, On the Death of a Friend. Continuing from the previous issue, the book is written by Jim McCann, with art by Angel Hernandez, and colours by Fran Gamboa.

As usual you can pick this up in two different covers; either the main cover(ad) by Stephen Thompson (coloured by Charlie Kirchoff) which features Isis, Sulu and Chekov, who also feature prominently in this chapter. Or alternatively there's a rarer retail incentive(ad) design by JJ Lendl, with a quarantine twist on their ongoing series of travel poster designs.

Continue below to check out the covers and a five page preview, plus other updates from the series.

You can continue reading the rest of the book by picking up a copy at your local comic book shop, or from online retailers like these: Ebay(ad), Things From Another World(ad), Forbidden Planet(ad), Amazon(ad). This arc will also be part of the third omnibus in the series, Weaker Than Man(ad), which is due out in May 2021, if you'd rather wait for the collected edition.

In other news from the series, showrunner Jackson Lanzig has confirmed the shape of the end of the series, tweeting that the final story arc will be a three-parter, due to start in May with issue twenty-two, which will deliver us to twenty-four issues in total as promised at the start of the series.

On a possibly related note, artist Stephen Thompson has recently shared some Spock and Kirk art on Twitter. I don't recognise these from previous issues in the series, so maybe this confirms the artist who began the series will be returning for the finale?

Also teasing things to come is artist Silvia Califano, with this nice image of the Enterprise, presumably from one of the next two issues, which she is the artist for.

Finally, looking back, issue 17 artist JK Woodward is currently selling some of the pages from that book, and of course shared a look at the artwork on offer. If you'd like to get hold of the originals, you can make contact via Instagram.

The characterization of Gary Seven has been way off-base in this series. That’s too bad, too, because otherwise I’ve loved Year Five. But the writers have done Gary and the Aegis badly, and they’ve contradicted every other account of the “Assignment: Earth” team. As far as I’m concerned, this isn’t Gary Seven, she isn’t Isis, and they aren’t the Aegis. Either they're the mirror counterparts or they're woefully out of character.
