Discovery's Captain Pike cast

CBS have announced a much anticipated bit of casting, the new Captain Pike, who will appear in season two of Star Trek: Discovery. The captain of the Enterprise will be played by Anson Mount, who bares a striking resemblance to the original Captain Pike, played by Jeffrey Hunter - So alike I'm not entirely convinced they haven't utalised time travel to just get the original actor to reprise the role!

You might recognise Mount as Black Bolt from Marvel's Inhumans, and his many other previous roles include significant parts in series including Conviction and Hell on Wheels.

Mount has made a lovely post on Facebook (where he has changed his profile picture to a Captain Pike action figure!), celebrating the news and describing his work already on the series:
A few days ago I had my first opportuntity to sit in the captain's chair... and I'm not embarassed to say I got a little emotional. I have been a Star Trek fan since about the age of 8 when I first discovered the original series when it was syndicated throughout the United States on our various local stations... AND to play a Captain... AND for that captain to be the iconic Christopher Pike... AND to be doing it on a show thas has the highest production values I've ever seen on television... AND to be doing it with CBS (who cast my in my first pilot ever)... whew... out of breath.

Suffice to say I'm TREMENDOUSLY humbled and thankful for this opportunity. I will work my ass off to live up to the very understandable expectations this role accompanies. So let's set our course and take engines to Warp factor 5. Engage!
In other season two news, TrekMovie revealed recently, after talking to showrunner Aaron Harberts at the Wondercon convention, that the next season will run for thirteen episodes - That's two less than season one, although that was also commissioned for thirteen episodes initially, and then extended.

We also know, via Variety, that series co-creator and executive producer Alex Kurtzman will also be directing next season; the first episode no less. Meanwhile TrekMovie again, report that Jonathan Frakes has also confirmed he will return to direct another episode.
