Cool shot of the Shenzhou!
And I love how proud Captain Georgiou looks when she's watching Burnham head off on her spacewalk. Speaking about her other role-models, her adoptive Vulcan parents, Martin-Green cast some interesting light on her character's background in the above interview:
I appreciate how courageous this story is and I appreciate how they have woven me into that family, because Spock is an institution…I'm 100% human - My parents were killed when I was very young and it happened at a Vulcan outpost, so they took responsibility for me. And I was commissioned to Sarek and Amanda’s care, so I became their surrogate daughter and thereby Spock’s [sister].Entertainment Weekly also posted a new interview this morning, with showrunner Aaron Harberts. He talked about the Star Trek-ian allegories influences by the current and evolving politcs throughout the production period:
There has been a serious Vulcan indoctrination. I was forced to assimilate.
The allegory is that we really started working on the show in earnest around the time the election was happening. The Klingons are going to help us really look at certain sides of ourselves and our country. Isolationism is a big theme. Racial purity is a big theme. The Klingons are not the enemy, but they do have a different view on things. It raises big questions: Should we let people in? Do we want to change? There’s also the question of just because you reach your hand out to someone, do they have to take it? Sometimes, they don’t want to take it. It’s been interesting to see how the times have become more of a mirror than we even thought they were going to be.
North Korea is in our thoughts as we finish the series. What began as a commentary on our own divided nation — in terms of Trump supporters and non-Trump supporters — has blown out to North Korea and how we’re right on the brink. [The U.S. is] actually right at the place where Starfleet finds itself in episode one and we couldn’t have anticipated that happening. But how do you end conflict when both sides have such strong opinions? Finally, StarTrek.com have continued their interview series with Sam Vartholomeos, otherwise known as Ensign Danby Connor. He gave this summary of his character:
Ensign Danby Connor is the U.S.S. Shenzhou's ops officer right up front, and he is Star Trek and Starfleet through and through. That is one thing I can say and one thing I really like about him. Nothing really conflicts with him. He is all about the Prime Directive, and there's a Captain and there's a Lieutenant Commander -- and everyone follows a code. When that code, and when the Prime Directive, all get crossed, his wires get crossed. He kind of uses Captain Georgiou, played by Michelle Yeoh, as his North Star, and he really wants to learn from her. That is one thing I really wanted to make clear about Connor, is that he wants to learn and move up.Star Trek: Discovery is due to start this September, and it will be distributed almost everywhere in the world on Netflix, except for the US where is will be available on CBS All Access, and Canada where it will be on Bell Media channels and services.
