Check out the Discovery's bridge in Variety

Variety's latest issue is featuring Star Trek: Discovery, and they have released their cover story online. The piece gives a brief history of how Discovery came to be, and and overview of the delays and changes in leadership. With a strictly industry/production bent it doesn't give a lot away in terms of new details, although there is mention of showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J. Berg having already mapped out a plan for a second season, and already plotting for a third!

What the piece does reveal in the most detail we've so far seen, is the bridge of the USS Discovery, thanks to a playful series of photos featuring Sonequa Martin-Green, Jason Issacs, and Michelle Yoeh. Check them out:

Star Trek Discovery publishing updates

Star Trek: Discovery is to set new standards for Star Trek tie-in fiction integration, with novels and comics launching alongside the series, co-ordinated by novelist and Discovery writer Kirsten Beyer. Befittingly, amongst all the other Discovery talk at the Star Trek las vegas convention, publishing got it's very own panel, which delivered lots of exciting news. Continue below to learn what's new:

First up, David Mack's first Discovery novel, Desperate Hours (which will be released near simultaneously with the start of the TV series), had it's cover and blurb reveal:

Aboard the Starship Shenzhou, Lieutenant Michael Burnham, a human woman raised and educated among Vulcans, is promoted to acting first officer. But if she wants to keep the job, she must prove to Captain Philippa Georgiou that she deserves to have it.

She gets her chance when the Shenzhou must protect a Federation colony that is under attack by an ancient alien vessel that has surfaced from the deepest fathoms of the planet’s dark, uncharted sea.

As the menace from this mysterious vessel grows stronger, Starfleet declares the colony expendable in the name of halting the threat. To save thousands of innocent lives, Burnham must infiltrate the alien ship. But to do so she needs to face the truth of her troubled past, and seek the aid of a man she has tried to avoid her entire life—until now.

Discovery Starship and Klingon design panels at Star Trek Las Vegas

The design side of Discovery got some love at the Star Trek Las Vegas convention, with panels focused on creature and starship design. Continue below for the latest news and artwork from those discussions:

At the creature design panel there was of course much talk of the Klingons, and TrekMovie has excellent coverage of the panel. Neville Page outlined the brief he had from former showrunner Bryan Fuller, to give the Klingons an enriched culture and aesthetic:
The words that he used were “The Klingons are self-ware estheticians, and I want them to appear less brutish and more conscious.” He made references [to] baroque and samurai [styles] in terms of armor because there is this whole suit [Torchbearer].
Page went on to describe how he took that and ran with it, to envision a culturally diverse empire:
The empire is very big. They don’t all grow up on Kronos. They don’t all live on the same planets and certainly those different planets would have different environments. So how would the cultures have evolved differently?…We tried to come up with cultural axioms for each house so each looks different and they bear a cultural patina like our cultures do here on Earth.
But of course we are also getting a new take on the Klingons biological variations in Discovery, with so far them all appearing to be bald. Page again had put much thought into this, even designing Klingon skulls (which feature repeatedly on the Klingon apparel in the show). The designers now envision the Klingons having extra-sensory receptors running along their skull ridges and down their spines, which drove the shape of the skull and the lack of hair (to not interfere with those senses).

Discovery Klingon talk at Star Trek Las Vegas

Today at the Star Trek Las Vagas convention there was a run of Discovery panels, with the actor and writer panels giving much attention to the Klingons. Lots of new details were discussed; continue below for the new details.

Most excitingly they revealed a new image of the Klingon Kol, giving us our first look at a Discovery Klingon outside the House of T'Kuvma - Kol has a distinctly different look, with a costume much more like those we've seen before in Star Trek.
