Discovery Comic Con preview reveals new art and stills

CBS have announced the details of Star Trek: Discovery events at the forthcoming San Diego Comic Con, including new posters, new stills from the show, and details of panels, and exhibition, and more! Continue below for all the details.

First up, lets check out the two new posters, which give us our best look yet at the USS Discovery, complete with holey saucer!

These posters will be given away, to one thousand visitors each day to the Star Trek: Discovery Gallery Takeover in the Michael J. Wolf Fine Arts Gallery. There you will be able to see props, costumes, and artwork from the series, as well as sit in the captain's chair, and get exclusive merchandise from a Discovery shop.

On the 22nd of July there will be a Star Trek Discovery panel moderated by guest star Rainn Wilson, and featuring cast members Sonequa Martin-Green, Jason Isaacs, Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Mary Wiseman, Anthony Rapp and James Frain, alongside executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Gretchen J. Berg, Heather Kadin, Aaron Harberts and Akiva Goldsman.

And for the sake of quirkiness (?), they have also created some special Star Trek pedicabs, made to look like the USS Discovery captain's chair. They will also support a giant delta above the chair, and screens playing the Discovery trailer in the armrest! These will be free to use in the Gaslamp District.

CBS have also released a couple of new stills, initially via Entertainment Weekly once again.

In this first we see T’Kuvma and the first really clear look at L’Rell. What I'm really seeing here though is the insane intricacy of the design of everything Klingon in this series: The make-up, the costumes, the sets, all WOW.

For those not so comfortable with another Klingon re-design (as, you know, there have been quite a few before). Showrunner Aaron Harberts is hoping we'll just accept it and enjoy the story, and also notes they have different looks for different houses (via Entertainment Weekly):
In the different versions of Trek, the Klingons have never been completely consistent. We will introduce several different houses with different styles. Hopefully, fans will become more invested in the characters than worried about the redesign.
The other new image is another of Captain Georgiou and Burnham:

Finally, if you just can't wait for that panel, CNet recently posted an interview with producer Alex Kurtzman, in which he discussed a few different aspects of the production. A recurring theme seems to be care to integrate the series into historic Trek, while also exploring new ground:
If you are a fan of Trek you are going to see a lot of things that hearken back to The Original Series and elements of The Original Series. I'm not just talking plot, but the spirit of what that show was. We are going to be revisiting a couple of things on Star Trek: Discovery that I think people are going to find familiar. Without spoiling anything, I think we are adhering to a timeline and sticking to the rules, but also I think finding some new areas and avenues of exploration that have only been alluded to, but never fully explored.
You have to respect canon as it’s been written. You can't say, “That never happened.” No, no no, you can’t do that, they would kill you. Star Trek fans would kill you. No, you have to respect canon. You have to understand the timelines and what the different timelines were and what the different universes were and how they all worked together. You have to keep very meticulous track of who, when, where, and why. And we have people in the writer’s room whose sole job is to say, “Nope, can’t do that!”
Here's the full interview:

Star Trek: Discovery is due to start this September, and it will be distributed almost everywhere in the world on Netflix, except for the US where is will be available on CBS All Access, and Canada where it will be on Bell Media channels and services.
