More Discovery updates!

Entertainment Weekly continue to tease out new details from their coverage of Star Trek: Discovery.

The visual influence of The Motion Picture can't be missed

Speaking about Star Trek influences, showrunner Aaron Harberts noted the cinematic influences which are readily apparent in the footage we've already seen, which he revealed is shop in 2:1 aspect ratio:

I think Nicholas Myers’ film are a touchstone, and not just because he’s been on staff with us. His storytelling is complex and intellectual and yet there’s a lot of room for character voices and character work, he’s done such an incredible job with the franchise. In terms of scope and scale, there’s something about Star Trek: The Motion Picture that really speaks to us as well. CBS has allowed us to find a cinematic language that’s wider in scope — our aspect ratio is 2:1 — and it just lends itself to a very lyrical way of telling the story. And just visually speaking, there’s also a little hint in terms of what J.J. Abrams did, a little bit, in terms of some of the visuals.

First look at Discovery transporters and other updates

This week's issue of Entertainment Weekly is out now, including a feature on Star Trek: Discovery they have been previewing all week. Among the new reveals is our first look at a new transporter on the USS Shenzhou, which is gloriously retro looking:

It has been previously reported that the USS Shenzhou is an older ship than the USS Discovery, and Entertainment Earth report will we indeed see something completely different once we board that ship.

For now though I love this look; I assume each dish targets one person for transport, and can't help but feel this will involve a really cool looking transporter effect!

Also notable here are the uniforms, including some sort body armour, suggesting a dangerous mission is about to be undertaken here. A look closely and you can see some very TOS-like phasers too!

First look at Discovery's Captain Lorca, and new details about Michael Burnham

Later this week Entertainment Weekly's latest issue will be running a feature on Star Trek: Discovery, and ahead of the print release they have been teasing new details from the series on their website. Today that included our first look at, and reveal of the full name of, Captain Gabriel Lorca, who they describe as "a steely Federation Starship Captain who’s considered a brilliant military tactician".

We also see here our first fuzzy out of focus look at the bridge of the USS Discovery!

Discovery launch date, and first good look at the ship

Today CBS have finally announced the launch date for Star Trek: Discovery. In the US and Canada the first episode will air on the 24th of September, while Netflix viewers in the rest of the world have to wait until the 25th. More exacting details below, but first, check out the new poster released to announce the launch date, giving us our first good look at the USS Discovery:

My god DST, what have you done...

Diamond Select Toys have destroyed the USS Enterprise!

Among their San Diego Comic Con exclusives this year, DST are to offer a new variant of their refit USS Enterprise, a near-glowing orange battle damaged "Final Flight" edition of the ship, playing out it's final moments in The Search For Spock.

Made in translucent plastic the ship doesn't feature the usual electronics (which would be visible in this medium) so it doesn't have any lights or sounds. This will be a limited edition of 400. Continue below for more images.

Movie Park's Star Trek roller coaster launches

After a year of teasing its construction, Movie Park Germany's Star Trek roller coaster, Operation Enterprise, has now opened! The TNG themed ride is the only Star Trek theme park attraction in the world right now (with the old Borg Assimilator closed, and other planned attractions not making it to reality yet), and there's more on offer than the ride, with a section of the park now Star Trek themed, including some really fun features. Let's check them out:

Revealed in photos celebrating the launch of the ride, and perhaps more exciting than the roller coaster itself, the Operation Enterprise experience includes the chance to walk through a full sized recreation of the USS Enterprise-D bridge! Complete with active Borg attack on the viewscreen.
