New from Wizkids is Frontiers, a game designed by Andrew Parks, based on Vlaada Chvátil's Mage Knight. Here is how Wizkids describe the elaborate game:
A contested region of space accessible through a known wormhole has drawn the attention of powerful forces throughout the galaxy. Both the Federation and the Klingon Empire, who share a delicate alliance at this time, have recently built outposts in the region. But now news of grave troubles brewing in the region has prompted both the Klingons and the Federation to investigate immediately. And here's what you get in the box to make all that happen:
Command your ship, recruit new crew members, earn experience points, and use your skills to confront the challenges of the Star Trek Universe. Explore and face a variety of challenges on a randomly built Space Map using the Venture Tile System first introduced in the award-winning game, Mage Knight.
Star Trek: Frontiers is designed for 1 to 4 players with multiple competitive, cooperative and solo scenarios. Work together to defeat hostile ships or compete to explore and uncover hidden mysteries. Players will need to overcome obstacles to expand their knowledge and use their leadership as they adventure in order to be victorious in their exploration!
The game includes miniatures of several ships, including a whole fleet of Borg Tactical Cubes, which I'm sure will all seem quite familiar if you know your Wizkids Star Trek games.
Also based on the idea of control regions of space is a new Star Trek version of the classic game Risk, released by USAopoly.
Instead of the Earth, players will seek to control planets from across the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, neatly split into regions normally controlled by the major powers of this part of the galaxy.
Starships and shuttlecraft take the place of the usual military themed pieces in the game, and consequently the game comes with quite the armada, some 225 little ships included!
Another USAopoly release is Star Trek Trivial Pursuit, which in this iteration of the classic board game does not feature an actual board! Instead however is a rather snazzy shuttlecraft Galileo card holder.
As I have previously reported, USAopoly have also released a new Star Trek version of Panic. And they have recently released a video giving a closer look at the game:
Finally, in the UK, Falcon de luxe will be releasing two new Star Trek jigsaws in September (so report StarTrek.com). Both are based on pieces from the 50 Artists 50 Years Star Trek art exhibition. There is a 1000 piece edition of Dusty Abell's character-filled Star Trek: The Original Series, and a 500 piece version of Nicky Barkla's TNG painting, The Final Frontier.
