Star Trek Beyond round-up: Posters, stills, music, first TV spot, and more

After plugging in the Star Trek Beyond marketing machine a week ago Paramount seems to have the thing on over-drive ever since, pumping out posters, stills, behind the scenes photos, another trailer, interviews, and more! Continue below for the latest:

Shortly after the reveal of the main US poster, Paramount also released a more character focused international poster design, which seems to have a few hints of the classic The Motion Picture poster's streaks of colour, albeit at a funny angle.

Not content at half the main cast being left of this one, amusingly Karl Urban fashioned his own "fixed" version, which he posted on Twitter.

Meanwhile this variation of the main US poster, with a wider field of view, showed up on the Star Trek Argentina Facebook page.

Joining the general posters, there are a whole load of character posters which Paramount have been trickling out over the week. So far we have Jaylah, McCoy, Chekov, Spock, Uhura, Sulu, and Scotty. I assume Kirk and Krall will complete the collection in short order. UPDATE: And now Kirk and Krall complete the set. The higher res versions of these give us a pretty good look at all those swarm ships too. Did you notice how the patch of light in each of them forms a subtle delta shape as well?

You can find a gallery of all the Star Trek Beyond posters on Trek Collective Archives.

In addition to all the posters, Paramount have released a host of new images. No big reveals here, but we do get a shot of Keenser, plus more views of all the new uniforms and props.

There is another Trek Collective Archives gallery for all the Star Trek Beyond promotional images so far released, and another with lists of all the trailers, including: The first TV spot, which has also been released, a German language one that does include a couple of brief new shots, but again, nothing too revealing:

What is rather interesting if you into behind the scenes stuff is comparing the effects shots between the first and second trailers, TrekCore have done a good analysis which is worth a look.

Meanwhile the cast and crew have been busy doing interviews. The most entertaining is surely IGN's with Karl Urban (aka Doctor McCoy), who revealed he managed to work in a reference to The Motion Picture, when talking about that being his favourite Trek film:
I love when he reappears, and he's got this huge beard and this big medallion around his chest -- and his chest hair! I love that! I actually put a nod to that in Star Trek Beyond. You'll see at the end of the film, I'm wearing an open shirt, and I've got a medallion on. Like, not a big one, but it's there, and it's a direct nod to DeForest [Kelley].
Though it seems we were lucky to get the good doctor back at all!
I had a conflicting schedule, and I had a decision to make about which film to do, and I was no longer under contract to do a third picture. So I had a decision to make, and it was talking with Justin that enabled me to commit to it.
It was fantastic. It was a breath of fresh air, and I really appreciated Justin's intimate knowledge and understanding of the character dynamics. In fact, I was on the fence about doing the movie until I spoke with Justin.
Meanwhile Collider talked to Chris Pine (Captain Kirk), who discussed his character's mindset in the film:
I would say getting over growing up in a militaristic environment there’s a hierarchy of what one does, you’re a private, then you’re a corporal, then you’re a sergeant, and all that. I think Kirk getting older and having a certain amount of success in the fleet, sees the potential or rather kind of meditates on what his future is. Does he want to retire? Does he want to continue? Does he want to go out for another five years? He definitely sees I guess what we saw on the GOP, debates, a bunch of older men and women in suits and ties and is like, “Am I gonna be that, or am I gonna be the dude on the motorcycle?”
I would say that this idea of turning a year older and realizing he’s surpassing his father in years but not knowing quite if he’s surpassing his father in terms of the kind of man he is, that weighs more heavily on Kirk in this one.
Kirk isn't the only character pondering his future, as Zoe Saldana discussed with Nerdist when they visited the set:
You are no longer immature. You are no longer inexperienced. You are getting really good at what you are doing. You are a little older. You are a little wiser. And you are starting to think about life, going, ‘What is it that we’re doing here? Why are we doing this? Why are we representing Starfleet away from home? Is it even worth it?
Zoe Saldana also talked to /Film on their set visit, giving some interesting insights into the character relationships, especially Uhura and Spock's:
Every relationship in this movie will be tested on a very, very high scale. The great thing about this instalment is that it’s not only Kirk and Spock and J.J.’s Spock and Uhura, his twist, it’s also Chekov and Scotty. It’s Sulu. So I’m really excited about this because now it’s an ensemble more than ever. Everybody’s relationship, all of their dynamics are tested. Spock and Uhura are going to be tested as well. To what extent? I don’t know. But I mean they made it in the show. They were old in the show. [laughs]

What more can I say without giving it away? They are in each other’s lives in a very passionate way. So you will see that. To what extent? I don’t know. But I think Spock is absolutely in love with Uhura. I think he’s crazy about her. And if Uhura is done with him, it’s going to kill him. [laughs]

I’m joking. But he really loves me more than I do him.
io9 also has a report from the set, including quite detailed descriptions of the events of a couple of scenes they saw being shot. I'll not quite here as they describe at some potentially spoilery length, but do go have a read if you're down for learning every detail!

You can see a bit more behind the scenes stuff in a few other promotional images released too, showing director Justin Lin at work with the actors:

From much more recently in production, composer Michael Giacchino and co have been busy recording the soundtrack this week, and Giacchino has teased a few snippets on social media. Including this awesome drumming:

And finally, a bit of fun: Here's the second Star Trek Beyond trailer, but cut with footage from the other third Star Trek movie. Superb:

  1. Um...Did the really get Sulu's photo reversed for the poster?

The delta has only been on the left side for what? 50 years?

And no one from end-to-end noticed?

  2. Your wish is Paramount's command, they just updated to fix that little error.
