Books bits: Shadows of the Machine blurb, and hints at future works

Lots of books news today, starting with a shiny new blurb for the next ebook novella, Shadow of the Machine, a post-The Motion Picture story from Star Trek first timer, Scott Harrison. which will be out in March:
An all-new original e-novella set in the Original Series universe—taking place immediately after the events of the 1979 film Star Trek: The Motion Picture!

After its recent encounter with V’ger, the U.S.S. Enterprise has returned to dry dock to finish its refit before commencing its second five-year mission. The crew has been granted a two-week period of shore leave before preparations for their next voyage begins. Shaken by their encounter with V’ger, Kirk, Spock, and Sulu travel to their respective homes and must reflect upon their lives—now forever changed.

Star Trek podcasts have been keeping Star Trek authors busy lately, with discussion of many works, and a few teases of things to come. Continue after the jump for news about a Quark ebook, DS9 and TOS novels, the US release of Star Trek Pop-Ups, a new book about costumes, and more!

While talking to the G and T Show, Paula Block and Terry Erdmann revealed their next ebook novella will be titled The Empty Sack. They anticipate this will be out late next year, but didn't reveal anything more than we already knew; that like their recent ebook, Lust's Latinum, Lost (and Found), it will feature Quark.

They also talked about their recent work on the new Star Trek Pop-Ups book, revealing why it hasn't turned up in the US yet - Apparently there is a particular type of paper used in the book, which there is not enough available of for the book to get simultaneous release around the world. So while the book has gone on sale in the UK already, it won't be officially available in the US until next September! If you just can't wait, you could always import it though - See my review to check out what you've got to look forward to.

Finally, as far as news goes, they revealed they are authoring a new coffee-table book on Star Trek costumes, which has the working title Star Trek: The Complete Costumes: Five Decades of Fashion From the Final Frontier. They have been interviewing many of the original costume designers for the book, and it will also feature new photography of costumes, as well as archive images, and photos taken for auctions. This is also aiming for September release. I expect this is the same book from Insight Editions announced a few months ago, which then had a different working title, Dressing the Final Frontier. UPDATE: Amazon now have this listed for pre-order, confirming the September release.

Block and Erdmann did talk more widely about their work in Star Trek, which they have done a lot of, well worth a listen. Meanwhile, in another edition of the G and T Show, Una McCormack spoke about her forthcoming DS9 book, The Missing, revealing some new details:
It foregrounds Ro Laren, Beverly Crusher, and a character I have longed to write for, which is Katherine Pulaski.
And then the other character in it is a character from one of my earlier books, my book Brinkmanship, which had a Tzenkethi character in it. I won't spoil her story, but she's now in Federation space, and she comes back, and is quite a significant character in the book.

I hope people enjoy it, it's a little bit of a murder mystery, there's a new alien species.

On TrekFM's Literary Treks, David Mack talked about his latest book, Section 31: Disavowed. He also reveal one detail about books to come, which is that the next Section 31 book, Control, is likely to be released in the spring of 2016! So we've got an agonising wait ahead! UPDATE: Since recording David Mack has posted an update to say that Control has now been pushed back, and likely wont appear until 2017 now! (Thanks to Jens Deffner for pointing me towards this).

Literary Treks have also recently set up a Good Reads reading group, so if you use that site, you might want to join up and read along with Literary Treks. And while not providing details of books to come several more authors have had interesting interviews elsewhere too: You can hear Kirsten Beyer discussing her Voyager novels on The Captain's Table, and read about the latest books from David Mack and Greg Cox in an interview with Paul Semel.

And finally, Joe Corroney recently posted (on Facebook) his artwork for Greg Cox's new TOS novel, Foul Deeds Will Rise, so we can enjoy that cover image without the titles:
