Star Trek to visit the Planet of the Apes!

I was anticipating IDW might announced a new Star Trek comic series soon, but I certainly wasn't anticipating this delightful news: IDW are teaming up with Boom Studios to bring us a Star Trek/The Planet of the Apes crossover, which appears to be titled The Primate Directive. The series will bring together the characters from classic 1960s versions of both series.

The series will be written by IDW Trek regulars, Scott and David Tiption, who have course are well versed in crossovers too, having already brought us the TNG/Doctor Who series Assimilation2, and the zombie-full Infestation. StarTrek.com gave a few teasing words from writer David Tipon:
With the Klingons secretly backing a renegade gorilla general in a coup for control of Ape City, Captain Kirk finds himself in the uncomfortable position of having to help out Dr. Zaius' orangutans. Taylor won't be happy with that!”
Art will come from Star Trek newbie, Rachael Stott - You can see some of her other work, on her website, and her Tumblr, where you'll find she's no stranger to drawing Trek; here (after the jump) are a couple of examples:

No news yet on how long this series will be, or when it will start. The City on the Edge of Forever concludes in October, so I would anticipate it could be coming any time from November.

Hm... sounds promising but I'm not sure if an interesting premise is enough for me to give IDW another chance.

Guess they're going the TOS route of making an "Ape Planet" to fit in with the Nazi Planet, Cowboy Planet, Indian Planet, and Cold War Planet?
